How Is Custom-Made Jewelry Created? From Idea to Final Pickup – Step by Step
Custom-made jewelry is a bit like tailoring an exquisite garment: instead of choosing something off the rack, you create something absolutely unique—designed specifically for your style, needs, and budget.
For many people, this is their first encounter with goldsmithing “behind the scenes,” which is why below we present a practical guide, offering a glimpse into how we work in our atelier—from the very first conversation to the moment you put on your finished ring or necklace.
We Start with the Purpose: Why Is This Piece Being Created?
It may sound simple, but this is the key. An engagement ring is designed differently (daily comfort and stone security), wedding bands differently (durability and wearability), and a commemorative pendant differently still (symbolism and longevity).
That’s why at the beginning we ask a few fundamental questions:
- Will the jewelry be worn daily or occasionally?
- What is your style—or the style of the person who will wear it (minimal vs. statement, vintage vs. modern)?
- Should it carry specific symbolism (a date, initials, a particular motif or gemstone)?
- Should it match an existing piece, such as a wedding band, ring, earrings, or a watch?
Your answers help us form the first clear vision of your jewelry. At this stage, inspiration photos or images of jewelry you already own are extremely helpful. We treat every project as unique, and we want our clients to feel that uniqueness throughout the entire process.
Technical Parameters
Metal
Once we understand the purpose of the piece, material choices become equally important: gold (yellow, white, or rose, and in which alloy—e.g. 14K / 585 or 18K / 750), silver, or platinum. We also take allergies into account, as certain alloys may cause sensitivity.
Importantly, in our atelier you can create jewelry using your own materials—we can reuse old jewelry or precious metal you already own, giving it a new life.
Gemstones
From metal, we naturally move on to gemstones:
- diamond or colored stones,
- natural or laboratory-grown stones (often a key factor in budgeting),
- whether a specific stone is a priority or if alternatives are acceptable.
Regardless of your choice, you can rely on expert selection and sourcing of the best stone within its class. We ensure full transparency regarding gemstone characteristics and provide appropriate documentation.
Size
Determining the correct size is crucial—even the most beautiful design loses its charm if it spins, pinches, or slips off. In our atelier, we carefully establish size using professional ring gauges and test models of similar width (wide bands often require a slightly different size than thin ones, even on the same finger).
We also consider natural finger size fluctuations throughout the day and across seasons (summer vs. winter). If the ring is meant to match a wedding band or form a set, proportions and sizing are determined together so everything sits comfortably and securely.
Budget
Understanding your priorities and budget is essential for us. No budget is ever “awkward”—it’s simply a design parameter.
If the priority is stone size, we design differently than when the focus is on a unique form and hand finishing. With your budget in mind, we help you choose materials and design solutions so that the final result meets—or exceeds—your expectations.
Timeline
If the jewelry is intended for a specific date (engagement, anniversary, wedding, or another meaningful occasion), please let us know. Custom jewelry typically takes several weeks to create, and more complex designs may take longer.
We never rush our work. Precision and meticulous attention to detail are essential. Quality is our signature and reflects our philosophy.
Design: From Sketch to Approval
In a premium atelier, design is both a creative and technical process. First, we capture the style, then translate it into a form that will be comfortable, durable, and beautiful for years to come. This is the most important stage, as decisions made here define the final outcome.
At this point, we determine aspects such as:
- proportions – delicate or bold, slim or substantial,
- line – soft and flowing or geometric and architectural,
- focus – one strong focal point (a central stone) or dispersed details (pavé, texture),
- light – mirror polish or satin/matte finishes that soften the form,
- character – classic, vintage, modern, minimal, or artistic one-of-a-kind.
The design phase aligns your vision with our execution strategy. We also focus on details that ensure wearing comfort—premium jewelry must be beautiful without compromising usability.
Crafting: Casting or Handcraft?
The method of execution is one of the most important decisions in custom jewelry. In our atelier, we never choose a technique simply because it is faster—we choose what best serves the specific design.
Most often, we work in one of two ways: casting (ideal for complex forms and 3D-designed projects) or handcrafting, where the master goldsmith’s skill defines character and finish. In practice, the finest results often combine both approaches: a precise cast base refined by hand for key details, adjustments, and finishing—so the result is truly made to measure.
Stone Setting and Final Finishing
Stone setting and finishing are the moments when a design truly becomes jewelry. They determine both aesthetics and long-term security.
- Prong settings offer lightness and maximum light exposure but require perfect geometry and ongoing wear checks.
- Bezel settings encase the stone in metal, making them among the safest options for daily wear—ideal for active lifestyles—and exceptionally clean and modern when well designed.
- Pavé and micro-pavé create a continuous surface of light and demand the highest precision; each stone must be set perfectly and regularly inspected over time.
- Channel settings hide stone edges within metal rails, creating a secure, elegant band of brilliance with excellent wearing comfort.
After setting comes finishing, which defines how the jewelry will age:
high polish creates a classic mirror finish; satin or brushed finishes offer a modern look and visually mask minor scratches; matte finishes calm the form but may naturally polish over time in high-contact areas; textures such as hammering or organic structures can transform a simple form into something distinctly personal—especially when contrasted with polished edges.
At this stage, we refine every detail: smoothing edges for comfort, shaping the inner profile of bands, rhodium plating white gold if required, or applying selective finishes such as blackening when part of the design.
Finally, there is one small detail carrying great emotion—the engraving. Initials, dates, symbols, or short phrases give jewelry meaning and memory. We engrave by hand to add an even more personal character.
Summary
Custom-made jewelry is a process in which every stage matters—from the first conversation about emotions, style, and purpose to the final polish and engraving. It is a creative journey filled with emotion, for both you and us.
We do not produce jewelry in haste or treat it as mass product. We believe that the highest quality, precision, and craftsmanship require time and patience—and that is what makes jewelry from our atelier truly special.
It is premium.
Can I use my own gold (e.g. from old jewelry)?
Yes – in our workshop, you can use your own precious metals, which will become part of a new design and, in doing so, be given a new life.
Is it possible to make an identical design to the one in the photo?
Usually, it is possible to create a design in this style, but with original modifications and proper technical adaptation. We do not aim to replicate existing designs – our goal is to create something truly unique and exceptional.
How long does a custom-made project take?
Creating premium custom-made jewelry usually takes 4–6 weeks, so it is important to begin the process well in advance if the piece needs to be ready by a specific date.
